It Comes In Waves is the second installment of an experimental residency program at Soo Visual Arts Center, a five-week residency in which Sophia Songmi Hill will create an evolving exhibition onsite. She will be working in the gallery throughout the five weeks, sometimes during our open hours to create the exhibition, with a closing reception for the public to see the final results.
Hill’s work in It Comes in Waves will use small comics, detailed watercolor works, and short stories that document efforts of self love and care to combat crushing pressures brought on by a capitalist society ruled by white supremacy. Her exhibition will critique the struggle to reimagine current realities in order to love one’s body, value one’s journey, and hold one’s failures gently. Hill describes the arc of the exhibition as an “ebb and flow evoking frustrations, despair, and inadvertent joy. New works will be added to the exhibition everyday over the course of a month; mirroring the constantly evolving, far from linear journey to figuring out how to love your damn self again.”
Sophia Songmi Hill received her BA from Macalester College in May of 2018. Hill lives and works in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She has exhibited at Law Warschaw Gallery at Macalester College and recently had a solo exhibition at Koch Gallery.
